A joint inspection was carried out by a joint inspection by the Veterinary Branch and Enforcement Branch of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with a team from Assam Police across different poultry and meat shops across Guwahati city. This drive was against the unhygienic sale of meat.
The inspection drive was carried out at Ganeshguri Bazar, Lalganesh, Hatigaon Road, Bhetapara Ghoramara, Saukuchi, Beharbari, Nalapara, Lakhra Bazar, Colony Bazar, Kalapahar, B.K. Kakati Road and Ulubari areas of Guwahati.
GMC had earlier issued an order regarding the culling of animals for consumption. This is to ensure safe supply of healthy meat to the consumers of the city. The animals are slaughtered at specified slaughter houses in scientific manner. The laws set by GMC rule out open selling of meat but a few continue to sell meat in an unhygienic manner.
During the inspection it was found that most shopkeepers do not follow the rules set by the GMC and meat found was not slaughtered in registered slaughter houses. Hence GMC seized around 80 kgs of mutton from those unauthorized meat shops and disposed the same at Boragaon Dumping ground. Also two meat shops were sealed as they could not produce any valid licence to the inspecting authority. During the drive a total amount of Rs. 20,500 was also imposed as a penalty.
