Fact Check: Majuli’s Satra Culture was NOT Established by Adi Sankaracharya

A snippet published in an esteemed English Daily of Assam has been creating outrage among the people on social media on sunday.

The newspaper printed an information on Sunday which read that Majuli “… island was founded by Adi Sankarchaya in 1510 AD who established monasteries there called ‘satras’.”
The information was printed in the ‘Apne Desh ko Jaano’ campaign which shares facts about India.

In reality, it was Mahapurush Srimanta Sankadeva who was the pioneer of the neo-vaishnavite movement and established the monasteries known as ‘satras’ in Majuli. Adi Sankaracharya was an Indian Philosopher who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta.

The image of the piece is doing rounds on social media creating an outrage among the people of Assam especially Majuli.

Along with the daily, some other online portals have also published this ‘misinformation’ on their websites.
