7 Coolers from Assam to Beat the Heat

After the Covid-19 cases, now the fluctuating and soaring mercury level is giving a tough time to the people of Assam. Recently, Guwahati reportedly was among the top 10 hottest cities in India for particular day . So we at Discover East compiled a list of coolers to help you cool down.

Try out these popular traditional coolers from the state of Assam in Northeast India.

1. Poita Bhaat

With 38 degree Celsius of temperature, a steaming plate of rice might not be very appetizing. But if you soak the cooked rice in water overnight and have it the next morning, it can be very cooling and soothing. Just add some salt and mustard oil to it and you are good to go. It goes best with pitika, especially aloo pitika.

Poita Bhaat is a popular delicacy as well as cooler during the summers. Transitionally, the idea was to make use of the leftover rice hence it was kept to ferment overnight.

2. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice or Nemu Paani is the best, easiest and healthiest option to beat the heat. It not only revitalizes your body but also flushes out toxins and impurities. Lemons are rich in Vitamin -C thus also helps in boosting your immunity. One glass of Lemon juice can easily leave you refreshed anytime, anywhere.

3. Thekera Tenga Juice

Garcinia Pedunculata or Thekera Tenga is a fruit known for its sourness. It is often used as a souring agent in different cuisines in Assam. To prepare the juice you’ll need to soak few pieces of dried thekera in water for about an hour. The more thekera you use, or the longer you soak is directly proportional to the sourness.

Strain the water if you want to, and mix it with salt and sugar as per your taste preferences. There you have your Thekera Tenga juice to keep you cool and refreshed.

4. Juroni Paani

It is prepared with Musa balbisiana or Bheem kol. It is a wild species of Banana found in Assam. Unlike the usual banana,this breed is all organic and has many seeds. To make the Juroni Paani, you need to slice a few pieces of bheem kol and soak in water for about 5-6 hours. Strain it if you want to, and that’s pretty much it!

You can also eat the slices of banana for that extra energy boast.

5. Daab

Daab or coconut water is another refreshing cooler which is loved across the country. This natural water can give you an instant energy refill. One may think that it is found only on the beaches, but is commonly available in Assam as well.

Apart from the water, one also relish the sweet white flesh as well. When the coconut is young, the flesh is soft. You actually pick your choice of Daab depending on your preference of water or the flesh.

6. Baelor Sharbat

Bael or wood apple is a fruit of both health and religious significance. This seasonal fruit is commonly consumed in the summers. Both engergising and revitalizing, two coolers can be created from this fruit. One by mashing and dissolving the ripe fruit it in water, and secondly in milk.

7. Kuhiyaror Rokh

This is a popular streetfood across the country. It’s refreshing, hydrating and sweet in taste all in the same glass. Also, high glucose content means instant energy from your all natural energy drink!!
