E-commerce major Amazon Inc has reportedly got the clearance to deliver alcohol in India starting with West Bengal. This is to prevent crowding in liquor shops and further spread of Covid-19.
According to a Reuters report, West Bengal State Beverages Corp has found Amazon to be eligible for registration with authorities. This corporation carries out online retail of liquor trade in West Bengal.
Along with Amazon, Big Basket has also secured the approval to deliver alcohol in this eastern state. Big Basket is an Indian supermarket backed by China based Alibaba.
“We are happy to add a new category to our range. We are now working on creating the supply chain and building the category on BigBasket. This is a good value addition for our existing customers and helps increase the basket size”, said BigBasket CEO Hari Menon as stated in a report.
With the outbreak of Covid-19, people have started preferring doorstep delivery for as many services as possible. Jharkhand was the first state in India to allow home delivery of Liquor. Food delivery providers Swiggy and Zomato too have started delivering alcohol in some parts of the country. Retailers were highly displeased by this decision.
