Ban on Sale and Consumption of Pork in Majuli over Swine Fever

A ban on sale, consumption of pig or any pork cuts has been issued in the district of Majuli in Assam. This order was issued today by the district magistrate after detection of African Swine Fever in the Mohorichuk village of the island district.

The village of Mohorichuk has been declared as the epicenter of the infection of African Swine fever. The area within the radius of one kilometre from this village has been marked as the infected zone while that within the radius of 10 kilometres has been marked as the surveillance zone by the administration.

Key points of the order are as follows:

  • No pig, pig feed, pig product shall be allowed in or out of the infected zone.
  • No animals will be allowed to be carried out of the infected zone.
  • No animal can be carried through through the infected area without proper permissions.
  • No person is allowed to take out any pig, dead or alive if suspected to be infected with the African Swine Fever.
  • No person is allowed to carry any material which may have come in contact of infected animals.
  • No sale or purchase of pork by any individual or organisation will be allowed without proper permission from veterinary authorities.

  • No one will try to bring pigs or meat to market areas if suspected to be infected.
  • The chief veterinary officer can take measures to dispose any pig if found to be infected.
  • All local bodies and administration will assist the department to control the infection.
  • Carcasses, by products, etc. of animals suspected to be infected shall not be disposed in water bodies.
  • No restaurant, dhaba, resort or hotel is allowed to serve pork in any form.
