Popular delicacies during Durga Puja
- Khichdi – It goes by many names in many parts of the country. But unlike the rest of the country where it is considered to be a quick replacement for plain rice, it is one of the most common religious in this region. Its taste increases manifold when accompanied with Labra, the Assamese version of the seasonal mixed vegetables and a tangy sweet tomato chutney.
Mutton Curry – It might be difficult to believe that people eat non vegetarian food during the days of Navaratri. But people do consume it during the Durga Puja days, and specially mutton delicacies. Mutton curry and mutton kasha are the favorites.
Jalebi – This deep fried and then sugar syrup dipped delicacy if the most popular dessert in the Durga Puja season. From the best of the sweet shops of the city to the temporary roadside ones, everyone makes jalebi during these days. And 1000s of kilograms of this dessert is sold during the 4-5 days of puja.
Payokh – Rice pudding is another of the delicacies that is often cooked and served as a religious offering. Puja Committees also serve payokh with khichdi as Prasad in the pujas. People also cook payokh without any religious reference during these days. And often served with hot luchi for breakfast or afternoon snacks.
Live Streetfood – Streetfood is the main demand during this season. Instead of eating at home, most people prefer to grab something while pendal hopping . Popular items include rolls, cutlets, chops (generally non vegetarian) and spicy ghugni !
