Fish-Cum Fish Crop Competition Held in Manipur

A fish Fair-cum-Fish Crop competition was organised by the Fishery Department, Government of Manipur on Monday on the eve of Ningol Chakkouba in Imphal. Along with the fair, a Fish Crop Competition was also held.

As per reported by ANI, fishes were sold at a discount of 20 per cent at fair.

During this festival, fish holds very important place as it is believed to symbolize wealth, fertility and good luck. It forms an important item in the feast of the festival.

As per an earlier notification  issued by the Director, Fishery Department, N Gpjemdro. The first prize winner of the competition will receive a cash award of Rs 1,00,000/-, the second prize winner will receive a cash award of Rs 70,000/-, and the third prize winner Rs 50,000/-. Besides, the highest producer of indigenous fish will be awarded a cash award of Rs 20,000 while 20 more winners of consolation prize will be given Rs 10,000 each.

Fish is one of the most popular ingredients of Manipur and this competition encourages the traditions. Similar traditions are also popular in the state of Assam in winter. Community fishing is a popular event across the Assam just before Magh Bihu.
