Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has barred the blending of other vegetable oil with mustard oil starting from 1st October 2020. The move has been taken to ensure safety in consumption of mustard oils along with its purity.
The step was taken was FSSAI as directed by the central government with a motive to check adulteration of mustard oil.
“No manufacturing of blended edible vegetable oil with mustard oil as an ingredient will be allowed with effect from October 1, 2020,” the FSSAI order stated.
“The Government of India, after due deliberation has directed Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to prohibit blending in this oil and to facilitate manufacture and sale of pure mustard oil for domestic consumption in public interest”, it further added.
A draft regulation will be prepared by FSSAI as the final regulations will will take time. Inputs from the stakeholders will be taken while preparing the final regulations.
The manufacturers and processors of edible oils have been directed to modify their FSSAI licenses.
As per the FSSAI regulations blending of two edible oils is allowed, provided the proportion by weight of any edible vegetable oil used in the blending process is not less than 20 per cent.
