As a clampdown against the sale of adulterated edible oils, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently launched a pan-india survey of branded and non branded oils. Around 4500 samples of oil have been collected in a period between August 25 – 27. The samples include different varieties of oils like palm, coconut, blended, olive oils etc.
This is the first time Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has initiated such a survey. With this survey, FSSAI aims to identify the adulteration hotspots within the country at the same time ensuring availability of pure and safe edible oils.
To ensure wider distribution of sample size, the survey has also included hilly and remote terrains of Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Daman & Diu along with Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At least 50 samples have been collected from the metro cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai & Kolkata.
The samples have been collected from retail, grocery shops, hypermarkets and supermarkets as well covering local and national brands. The results of the survey are expected to be out within a month.
The consumption of edible oils have inceased manifold in the recent years. The leading ones include mustard oil, refined sunflower oil and palm oil.
