Litchi from Assam is the latest organic food from India to be made available in the markets of London. A batch comprising of five varieties of this fruit including Tezpur Litchi will be on list of exported fruits.
Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma was present during the event in the Tezpur Convention Center. The event also saw the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary,Atul Bora and the Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Ranjeet Kumar Dass. Additional Chief Secretary, Dr. Ashish Kr. Bhutani and Director of Agriculture, Assam, A. L. Gyani were also present.
Tezpur Litchi has a Geographical Indication with application number of 438 and certificate number 230. The application for the tag was filled by the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC) in the year 2013.
This lot of Tezpur Litchi has been exported by the Agnigarh Farmer Producer Company via Kiega Exims. Kiega Exims is a joint collaboration of Assam Agriculture University, Agriculture Department of Sonitpur district and NABARD.
The unique taste of the fruit which grows in this region is the reason of its high demand in the state. With the export to other nations, local farmers will now be able to get a better price of their produce. A huge consignment of tender jackfruit from Assam was exported to Dubai in the month of April.
