This variety is cultivated in the West Jaintia Hills of the state. This special variety of turmeric is known to have a high quantity of curcumin, the active ingredient in the spice. According to research, other variety of turmeric usually has 3% to 5% curcumin content while Lakadong is believed to have 12%. Research claims that this ingredient can kill fungus faster than other spice, lower cholesterol levels, protect the body from diabetes and even boast immunity etc.
Lakadong turmeric was exported to the United States last year. And earlier this year Assam’s popular Kazi Nemu was made available in the European markets and Red Rice in the United States.
