The Manipur government is considering to legalize the production and sale of country-made liquor in the state. Deputy Chief Minister of the state Y Joykumar Singh has begun inspecting distilled indigenous country liquor in this regard.
So far, the assigned committee has inspected two DIC manufacturing units at Sekmai Awang Leikai and Phayeng in Imphal West on Wednesday. The team inspected if the liquor were clean and non toxic.
The Deputy CM further added that DIC liquors plays a crucial part of Manipuri culture and also helps in generating income for the local people. Hence, every household in Sekmai and Phayeng have their own distillery. Despite this, the state imports and consumes foreign made alcohol.
“We’ll discuss how to promote our DIC liquors for sale outside the state and to tap the natural skill of the local people,” Deputy CM Joykumar added as per a report.
Joykumar further said that a discussion will be held on Thursday regarding the implementation of Manipur Liquor Prohibition (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018. The bill has was being assessed as informed by the state assembly on January 22 which proposes to allow manufature of alcoholic liquor for sale outside the state.
