Homemade wine is very popular and the Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday took the decision to approve the manufacture and sale of homemade fruit wines in the state.
As stated by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, rules will be formulated by the state government in this regard. Individuals will be able to make and sell wine in the market under these formulated rules.
Also, the homemade wine producers shall have to pay ad valorem lesser than other products which will be Rs 100 per case. The license fees for the producers has been fixed at Rs 700 per annum. As stated by the Chief Minister, no VAT will be levied on the producers.
The Chief Minister added that this move will not only boost the overall wine sector but also be beneficial for farmers producing fruits in the state.
The planning to issue licenses for the sale and manufacture of homemade fruit wines to boos the domestic and international market was earlier announced in the month of May. This came as a good news for the local brewers who have been making fruit wines since more than a decade. They would produce and bottle but could not sell in the market due to lack of commercial license.
The commercialization of fruit wine will give the brewers the much needed backing also boosting the local economy.
