Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday stated that discussions have been carried out to implement Operation Greens with Directorate of Food Processing (DOFP) Meghalaya.
As stated by the Chief Minister, the operation will be implemented for value addition of Pineapple along with three vegetables- tomato potato and onion. These items have been identified by Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
The project of Operation Greens was approved by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The objective behind this project is to stabilize supply of tomato, onion and potato (TOP) crops in the country and top ensure the availability of these crops across the country throughout the year without inconsistency in prices. The project was introduced in 2018-19 budget session. An amount of 500 crores was allocated to support farmer producers’ organisations (FPOs), agri-logistics, processing facilities and professional management.
Earlier in June, the Food Processing Ministry had extended project from tomato, onion and potato crops to additional 10 fruits (Mango, Banana, Guava, Kiwi, Lichi, Papaya, Citrus, Pineapple, Pomegranate, Jackfruit) and 8 vegetables (French beans, Bitter Gourd, Brinjal, Capsicum, Carrot, Cauliflower, Chilies (Green) and Okra).
The move was implemented to provide subsidy for their storage and transportation from surplus production areas to major consumption centers.
