Indian train journeys are incomplete without ‘moongphali’ or peanuts. If you hear a hawker shouting ‘Time-pass’ from a different berth in a train, then understand that the favorite ‘Indian train conversation starter’ is on its way. The way it’s eaten is oddly satisfactory.

Unroll the paper cone and display the peanuts. Then unfold the tiny salt paper pouches. (You are not a true Indian if you don’t ask for more of these salt pouches). Crack the shell with your thumb or teeth, pop the peanut into your mouth, lick the salt with your finger. Now tell me- is it possible for the person sitting near you to ignore this sight?

3. Tamul : the Taste of Assam.

Chewing gum or mints can be a very ‘fresh’ way to crack up a conversation with someone. If you are bored waiting for a bus or in a bank and you want someone to talk you can start by either asking or offering a gum or mint. Even if the other person doesn’t need it or if he/she doesn’t have any to give you, the move for a conversation has already been made. So enjoy your chat but do not swallow the gum like Chandler!
