The West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited ( WAMUL ), commonly known as Purabi Dairy has been able to sell milk to neighboring states inspite of the lockdowns induced by the second wave of COVID-19. This is a very rare happening as the state of Assam usually has a deficit of milk and buys the same from the producers in Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
This ability to sell access milk to the neighboring states comes because of two main reasons. Firstly due to the limited operating hours of many small businesses like tea vendors and sweet shops, the requirement of milk in the market has gone down drastically. Even the temporary closure of educational and business establishments during the second wave of COVID-19 has lead to even lesser sales. Secondly, since the small milk producers are now unable to sell their product in local markets, Meaning that WAMUL has a larger quantity at its disposal.
WAMUL is currently procuring nearly 150% of its milk procurement in the month of April according to a statement by the Managing Director, S. D. Bose. Since the restaurants and hotels of the city are currently working in very low demand, the requirement of milk has also decreased. Leading to the ability to sell the access milk procured to other states which are currently facing a deficit.
