Niswarth Seva Barak, an NGO comprising of Alumni of NIT Silchar, has been actively providing relief in the Barak valley region of Assam. Niswarth Sevak’s with support from Silchar Medical College Hospital officials identified the urgent need of a testing lab helped through fast-track fundraising of Rs. 1,160,665. Which helped in procurement and installation of equipment in record time and making the 2nd PCR lab completely ready and available for public use. Authorities say that this helped them perform 1500-2000 tests per day, which was an imminent need during the second wave peak.
Along with the needs of healthcare systems, the members also identified a completely unnoticed problem, which needed urgent attention. As the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic caused stringent lockdown and other restrictions, the family of sex workers were left in the lurch and their livelihoods came to a standstill. Members from across the globe identified this overlooked section and along with committed local members on the ground level, organised daily ration for seventy such families residing in the red light areas of Silchar District. Masks, soap and sanitizer was also provided to help them sustain for a month.
Niswarth Seva Barak was formed when Deb, Guru, Subhrojyoti and Pranab residing in different countries, connected with other friends Arindam, Biswajit, Samik, Supriyo and Rajat staying in India to start the fight against Covid. Their initiative of unconditional service for the people of the Barak valley has definitely saved many lives.
The team is now planning to work with local NGOs to reach out to remote parts of region and help get as many people vaccinated against COVID-19 as possible. The team will help elderly people with vaccination booking and commute to vaccination centers.
