Students of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati have created a portable devices to sanitize surfaces. Named UV Astra, the device is small enough to be carried in a pocket.
UV Astra used Ultraviolet Radiation to sanitize surfaces. Ultraviolet light is known to kill harmful microbes like bacteria and viruses upon exposure. UV technology is already used in the medical and pharmaceutical, among others, for sanitization of equipment and products.
The small size of the equipment is extremely useful for sanitizing small and hard to clean surfaces with ease. Handles, door knobs, holders and switches are known to spread viruses from person to person. With the length of around 3 centimetres and weight of around 10 grams, this device can access the small curves and bends.
Also the ultraviolet radiation does not cause skin issues caused by the daily use if alcohol based sanitizers. It can also be used to sanitize Personal Protection Equipment ( PPE Kits ) making their re-usability possible.
Designed by two civil engineering students Anant Mittal and Shubham Yennawar of IIT Guwahati, this device can be a revolution in the fight against Covid-19. The low power radiation does not cause any harm to humans says the creators. It can be powered via any mobile phone, making it very easy to use.
