The 454th Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Shankardev was organised with religious vigour across the state today. Tirubhav Tithi in Assamese translates to death anniversary.
Mahapurush Srimanta Shankardev was the person who is known as the creator of the Assamese culture. He created the Neo-Vaishnavite movement known as the Ekasarana Dharma. He and his disciple Sri Sri Madhabdev are the ones to set up the Satras, the monasteries of Assam culture as centers of learning and culture. Also, the way of worshiping followed in the Naamghars of today is another of his creations. It involves chanting of poems alongside playing of traditional musical instruments and rhythmic clapping. A majority of such poems, called the Borgeet were created by Srimanta Shankardev.
The 454th death anniversary of the great saint was organised in a variety of places in different scales. Local community gathered for Naam Kirtan organised in Naamghars across Assam to mark the occasion. Naamghars are places of worship of the Ekasarana Dharma practiced and followed in the state. Several organisations including offices and schools also organised prayers. Multiple ministers of Assam Cabinet and MLAs joined the chief minister, in a traditional prayer event organised in the BJP head office located in Hengrabari of Guwahati. Following the prayers, traditional prasad in the form of boot-maah-upokoron meaning gram, lentils and fruits were distributed on pieces of banana leaves.
