The Maa Kamakhya Temple authorities has issued a press release saying that the temple doors will remain closed till the 30th of June for devotees. This decision was taken keeping in mind the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19. And the closed days will also include the revered Ambubachi Mela .
This would mean that there will be strictly no entry for any devotees till the doors are reopened for tourists. The release also discouraged any sadhus or pilgrims from other places to come for this year’s Ambubachi Mela. The temple authority also made it clear that there shall be no arrangements made for accommodation or food of any devotees during the mela.
This year’s Ambubachi Mela starts on the 22nd of June and ends on the 26th of same month. This four day religious festival usually witnesses huge number of devotees to the temple. They come from all over India and even foreign countries. This event is not only a showcase of the rich religious heritage of Assam, but also a very important tourism destination.
This is the second consecutive year that the festival has been held like this. Previous year’s festival also was cancelled because of the first wave of the global pandemic. And the temple authorities have requested support to keep its doors closed and keep everyone safe during these times.
Another important group of temples ,the Panchatirtha of Hajo had already closed its doors after Bohag Bihu.
