The handwoven cotton cloth called Gamocha is a very important part of the Assamese life and culture. Its importance can be imagined from the fact that the Prime Minister of India has been seen adorning the same on his neck on several important occasions. Different varieties of gamocha are used for different purposes ranging from religious presentation to day to day work.
Controversies regarding this handicraft are neither new nor few in number. And the most recent one includes a teacher on a popular online leaning platform telling his students that Gamocha is an animal from Assam. The video came to limelight a few days back and caused quite a hue and cry on social, electronic as well as print media. GradeUp has informed that the video was in-fact an old course content and proper action was taken on the trainer in context.
Following this controversy, My Gov Assam released a creative enumerating the types of this cotton handicraft. This creative also had the uses of each one them mentioned alongside the name. This collective knowledge in a easily shareable format can benefit the huge number of people who are connect via social media platforms and beyond.
It will also clear few doubts about the various types, dimensions and uses of one of the main cultural symbols of Assam.
