As a move to preserve and beautify the archaeological sites of the Sivasagar district in Assam, the Govt of Assam has decided to set up a world-class museum in the district. The announcement was made by Assam Archaeology Minister Keshab Mahanta.
Earlier Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also informed that the Assam Heritage Bill was passed to protect state’s rich heritages. “Moreover, a world class museum will be established in iconic site Sivasagar”, he added.
As per reports, the central government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 3,500 cr for the preservation and beautification of the cultural heritage. the centre has identified Sivasagar as one of the 5 iconic sites in India.
On the occasion World Heritage Week (19th Nov to 25th Nov), the Chief Minister urged the people of the state to preserve historical monuments and antiquities as they represent the art, culture and people of the state.
The Sivasagar district is endowed with historical significance as it was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1969 to 1788.
