The traditional Deodhani performance of Assam was showcased in the courtyard of the famous Kamakhya Temple in front of thousands of devotees.
Deodhani is one of the oldest art forms from the state of Assam. It is generally performed as a tribute to Manasa Devi, the Goddess of serpents. So the performances take place alongside the worship of the goddess on the occasion of Manasa Puja. The performance itself involves several devotees dancing in trance like state. The performers often carry swords and other weapons. Beating drums, taal and horns are some musical instruments that are also part of this performance. The beats and the tempo help to maintain and control the moves of the dance. In the old days, these performance were accompanied by animal sacrifices as well. Some celebrations include the presentation another traditional art form called the Ojapali.
The Deodhani performance in the Kamakhya Temple premises is an annual celebration. It takes place in the first three days of the Bhado month of the Assamese calendar. This also includes the Dumahi or the day when the month changes. This year the dates were the 17th, 18th an the 19th of August.
