Tomorrow is Maha Shivratri, the main festival of the followers of the Shaivism sect of Hinduism. These group of Hindus worship Lord Shiva as the main and most powerful deity. And Team Discover East has compiled a list of Shiva Temples in and around the city of Guwahati.
There are uncountable Shiva temples across the city and the region as a whole. We have listed only the old and famous ones in this writeup.
Basistha Temple
One of the oldest of the list, this temple now stands with the Asram of the ancient Sage named Basistha. On the banks of the stream, this Shiva Temple is one of the first choices to visit on this day.
Sukreshwar Temple
This temple is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River. This location attracts one of the largest number of religious tourists owing to its central location in the heart of the city. It also offers a very beautiful view of the city.
Umananda Temple
This temple is located on an the Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra river. The only way to reach this temple is by boats and ferries. The usually serine island lights up with festivities on the occasion of Maha Shivratri.
Bhutnath Temple
Another Shiva Temple of the bank of the Brahmaputra, this temple stands next to one of the main cremation ground in the city.
Lankeshwar Temple
This temple is located on the edge of the Guwahati city near the Gauhati University. It is another one of the Shiva Temples of the city which attract huge number of followers.
Janardhan Temple
The Janardhan Temple is located infront of the Sukreshwar Temple in Pan Bazar. This temple hosts a special Yagya on the occasion of the special.
Rudeshwar Temple
This temple is another of the age old Shiva Temples located in the region and this one is located on the Northern bank of the river in the city of Guwahati.
