In a move to boost tourism in India, 194 lighthouses will be turned into major tourist hotspots. The decision was taken in a meeting on Tuesday chaired by Union Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
The Minister emphasized on giving preferences to ancient ones which are over 100 years old as the Ministry aims to promote ancient tourism. By this development people will come to know about the enriched history of the existing lighthouses in India.
Under this initiative, museum, aquarium, children play area, gardens and water bodies will be built around the lighthouses. The ministry also aims to generate local employment through this move.
India has an enormous coastline with Bay of Bengal on the East, Arabian Sea on the West and Indian Ocean on the South. With a history of international trade history since ancient times, India has has a large number of lighthouses. And their age range from the pre – British era to modern day.
This announcement comes after a few days after the ASI had allowed the opening of protected establishments with proper safety measures . These monuments also include a bulk of tourist destinations of the country.
