Twenty matches of the 131st Durand Cup will be hosted in Northeast India. Ten of these matches are scheduled to be hosted in Guwahati and ten more in Imphal.
Durand Cup is the oldest football competition not only in India, but also in the entire continent of Asia. And this year’s competition will see a total of twenty teams competing for the prestigious trophy. Out of them are the top ten football teams from the Indian Super League, six of the top football clubs and four teams from the defense services. Out of the defense services, two teams are from the Indian Army and one team each from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy respectively.
This year will see the 131st Durand Cup and the matches will be played across five stadiums of the country. These locations include Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati and Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal. These two locations will host ten matches each of the initial forty matches of the group stage.
To spread awareness about the game and invite more and more enthusiasts, the trophies are carried to the home cities of all the participating teams as well the venues of the matches. And with the same aim, all three trophies were in Guwahati today. Speaking on the occasion, Assam CM thanked the Durand Organizing Committee for choosing Guwahati as a venue. He talked about the new stadiums and policies that are put in place to encourage sports in the state. Mr Sarma also asked the people to watch all the ten matches to be hosted in Guwahati.
