Two Cities of Madhya Pradesh Included in UNESCO Heritage List


The cities of Orchha and Gwalior of Madhya Pradesh found places in the World Heritage Cities list of UNESCO under its urban landscape city programme.

The state government informed about the inclusion recently. This achievement has been termed as a major step in boosting the tourism sector of the state as well the country.

A UNESCO team will pay a vist to the state in 2021 have a look at the cities. A master plan for the beautification if the two heritage cities will be carried out by UNESCO along with the state government.

Under the plan UNESCO will suggest best measures and resources for the development of these places under the Historic Urban Landscape recommendations.

Gwalior is known for its palaces and temples with intricate works. It was a major site of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Established by Rudra Pratap Singh, Orchha boasts of brilliant architectural marvels including mughal-inspired palaces, temples and royal chhatris. The name ‘Orchha’ means ‘hidden palace’ perhaps signifying that city is indeed a hidden treasure in the country.
