This year matches of the Durand Cup will be played in Kokrajhar and Shillong for the first time. The chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Region, Pramod Boro recently talked about the upcoming tournament.
Like other parts of Northeast India, football is very popular in Bodoland. The local administration has been taking steps to improve the scenario regarding the game. They have developed facilities, identified talent and organized important tournaments towards that goal. BTR had organized the Inter Sixth Schedule Premier League 2022 and the league matches of the Hero National Santosh Trophy. Which was supported by the All India Football Federation. It is a matter of pride that Kokrajhar was chosen as a venue for the Durand Cup.
Kokrajhar has two grounds where national-level matches were played earlier. These are the SAI Centre Kokrajhar ground and Kokrajhar District Sports Association (KDSA) ground. And they are planning to schedule the Durand Cup matches on these grounds. Developments ahead of these matches will lead to the long-term development of the sport. He mentioned that discussions are on with the AIFF to open two football academies in BTAD. One will be for boys and the other for guys with a capacity of 50 each. A list of coaches have also been shortlisted to be sent to the AIFF for A-level certification to teach the young footballers.
Pramod Boro also announced a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs to the top football clubs at the district level. Financial assistance has also been promised to improve the training conditions of the clubs. Football also attracts a huge following across the region. ISPL 2022 and Hero Santosh Trophy matches witnessed more crowds than expected. So the Durand Cup matches will attract even larger crowds. Also BTR will provide an excellent environment for the players.
