Operation Ganga : Mission to Safely Evacuate all Indians from Ukraine

After the war broke out in different parts of the European country of Ukraine towards the end of February, many Indian citizens were still stuck in the country. India launched the Operation Ganga in order to evacuate the Indians in Ukraine and then bring them home safely.

Ukraine is one of the favorite destination for students perusing medical degrees. Mainly due to the lack of adequate resources for the course in their own country. In India, that resource is a very limited number of government medical colleges and the high fees of the private ones. And all one has to do is to clear the exam as stipulated by Indian education system to continue their practice in India. So a large number of Indian students decide to take up their education in the European Nation. And it is no surprise that the bulk of the Indians that need to be evacuated now are young students.

The initial flight for evacuation was carried out by the Tata Group owned Air India. Following which the Ministry of External Affairs decided to press the Indian Air Force into action. Other private fliers which include SpiceJet and GO FIRST have also joined in this project. As many as 30000 Indians are expected to be in the country.

Since flying into Ukraine have become almost impossible, the people were told to leave the country as soon as possible, specially from the cities of Kiev and Kharkiv . Subsequently these citizens are being evacuated from the airports in the neighboring countries. These include Poland, Hungary , Slovakia, and Romania. And an expected number of around 3000 citizens are being evacuated under Operation Ganga.

Operation Ganga started on the 26th of February and four Indian ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia, Hardeep Singh Puri, Kiren Rijiju and VK Singh are now in different locations of Europe to make sure that the operations go on smoothly.
