The Nilgiris district on the South Indian state state of Tamil Nadu has not open its doors for tourism activities yet, the district collector cautioned the people on Tuesday. The district border has been witnessing huge traffic following the relaxation in norms to issue e-pass in the state.
As a result, district collector J Innocent Divya had to caution people to bar them from entering the hill district for tourism purpose. As per the collector, about 3000 people are entering the district on a daily basis since the e-pass relaxation were declared.
The collector further said a heavy penalty will be imposed if anyone is found in the hill district on tourism purposes. They will also be sent back immediately, added Divya. In case any private cottages or lodges are found to be operating illegally, they will be sealed. And immediate action will also be taken against the owners as well.
Just like the rest of the country, the tourism industry is the worst hit sector in this district as well. Its even more effected as the Nilgiris district is a prime tourism destination of the state. Recently, the hoteliers of the district have requested the state government to allow them reopen their businesses. The pandemic came a big blow to the hoteliers, restaurant owners, taxi operators and private cottage owners.
In a report by TOI, N Chandrasekar, secretary, Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association said that they are the only sector with zero income in the hill district for the past five months.
