International Widows Day : Generation Equality

The 23rd of June is celebrated as the International Widows Day across multiple countries of the world. It was first observed in 2011 to draw public attention to the problems and unique support needed for these ladies. It is celebrated in accordance with the General Assembly of the United Nations.

These year’s theme for International Widows Day is I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights. It is created to match the UN Women’s new multi-generational campaign of Generation Equality.

Widows face not only emotional and psychological problems, but also social ones. often they are discriminated and inheritance rights denied. they also face stigma in the society regarding their misfortune.

Need of International Widows Day in Developing Countries.

Women in developing countries often face more problems compared to those in the developed ones. A few of the key reasons for the same are as follows.

  • Poverty
  • Violence
  • Health
  • Conflict – Related Situations

According to the UN , there are almost 258 million widows worldwide and at-least one out of every ten live in extreme poverty.

This event calls for all action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows across nations. Equality and respect are among the most important needs of the hour for these ladies.
