World Wetlands Day aims to spread awareness about the need of wetland regions. Wetlands are essential for maintaining the delicate ecological balance by providing a habitat for a large variety of aquatic and avian life.
Guwahati Wildlife Division organised an event at Deepor Beel on 2nd January to commemorate this event. Assam’s Forests and Environment Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and local MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita attended this celebration.
The event was flagged off with a cleanliness drive conducted by the forest department of Assam and Midway Journey. A workshop on plastic waste and segregation of wastes at source was also organised. Multiple competitions including painting, poster making and slogan writing were also organised. The theme was “Protect Deepor Beel, Role of people in conservation of Wetland etc.” to spread awareness. Birding and games about environmental education were also hosted to educate students. The winners received their awards at the end of the celebration.
Purnima Devi Burman, KK Sharma, Anwaruddin Choudhary, PC Bhattacharya and Partha Das also attended this event. They spoke about the importance of the only Ramsar Site of Assam in protecting the environment. They also educated the guests about the ecological importance of natural wetlands. As well as their role in the conservation of wildlife.
Volunteers of the socio-cultural organisation Nirbak enacted a mime act to generate awareness. The act highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness at the Deepor Beel on World Wetlands Day 2023.
