The international community observes World Youth Skills Day annually on 15th July. This day was established in December 2014 by the United Nations General Assembly. The objective of this day is to recognize the importance of facilitating young people with skills for employment as well as to highlight their role amid current and future challenges.
Along with many other activities, the ongoing pandemic has put a halt on technical and vocational education and training institutions. According to the United Nations, about 70% of the World’s learners have been affected by school closures.
Youth unemployment is one the major issues for developed as well as developing countries. As per the UN data, one in five young people are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET). Three out of four of young NEETs are women.
Owing to the pandemic situation, this year various events will take place virtually with the theme ‘Skills for a Resilient Youth’ to mark the observance of the day. An online panel discussion will take place organized by the Permanent Missions of Portugal and Sri Lanka to the United Nations, together with UNESCO, ILO and the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also deliver an address to mark the World Youth Skills Day. Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has organized a digital conclave to observe the day.
Skill India is an initiative of the central government. The objective is to empower the youth with skill sets which make them productive.
