Guwahati: Badungduppa Kalakendra located in the Rampur region of Goalpara is ready to host yet another edition of Under the Sal Tree. The 14th Under the Sal Tree flags off on Friday, December 15.
Under the Sal Tree is one of the most unique events. Hosted amidst sal tree plantations since its inception, this year’s event will be hosted on December 15, 16 and 17. Hosted in completely natural settings, this is one of the most popular theatre events. The lack of use of electrical devices is what makes this event so popular. The organizers have created the set using completely naturally available materials. Also they use only locally available bamboo and straw to make the seating arrangements.
Late Sukrachrjya Rabha, one of the most respected theater personalities in the region had started this event. The organisers mentioned that the 14th Under the Sal Tree is being organised this year. The organisers, Badungduppa Kalakendra will be celebrating the Silver Jubilee next year.

Your unconditional love during this journey of many ups and downs spanning a period of over two long decades. And have always been a testament of immense inspiration and true comradeship. Let us take the pleasure of extending our gratitude for your support and goodwill on the eve of celebrating 25 years of existence,” said Badungduppa Kalakendra managing director Madan Rabha.
Lineup for 14th Under the Sal Tree Theater Festival
Five plays will be staged in the three days of the 14th edition of the unique festival. On the inaugural day Badungduppa Kalakendra will present a Rabha language play ‘Madaiah Muchi’ directed by Sukracharjya Rabha. It will be followed by a Bengali play ‘Srijon Hobe Kabe’ by scriptwriter and director Bidyutjit Chakraborty will be staged by Kalabhumi, Agartala.
On day 2, Chena Adhuli, West Bengal will present ‘Pala Kuntala’, a Bengali play. The script and direction are by Rajat Das. Later in the afternoon Purbaranga, Guwahati will perform the Assamese play ‘Ratnakar’. The script and direction are by Gunakar Dev Goswami.
On December 17, Naya Theatre of Bhopal will perform the Chhattisgarhi and Hindi play ‘Charandas Chor’. Habib Tanvir has directed this play.
The organizers also mentioned that after the plays discussions in the evening amid bonfire will be taking place.
