The first edition of the Assam Youth Olympics concluded successfully today in Guwahati with the final awards being given out.
The six day sports extravaganza drew to an end today evening in the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati. The closing ceremony saw the presence of Cabinet Minister and former Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal. Current Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present along with several other dignitaries. The event also saw prize distributions to the teams and cultural shows.
Congratulating all the winners and participants, the Assam chief minister mentioned that this competition will encourage more sports activities. He also expressed his hope that it will help the youth to practice a healthy lifestyle and take part in such events.
The team from Guwahati managed to lead the 35 teams with 219 medals, out of them 74 gold, 75 silver and 70 bronze. Sivasagar came second with a total of 69 medals including 25 gold, 22 silver and 22 bronze in their tally. Third was Dibrugarh with 76 medals out of which are 24 gold, 23 silver and 29 bronze. These teams also received a cash award of Rs. 1,00,000 , Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 55,000 successfully. On the other side, the teams from Dhubri, Hojai, Karimganj and South Salmara districts failed to win any medals.
