The Guwahati Wildlife Division organised the Deepor Beel Bird Count Exercise. The event was organised on the 4th of January on the waters and banks of the only Ramsar Site in the state. A Spot Bird Photography Contest was also organised to mark the event.
Several photography enthusiasts, birding experts and photo journalists were present for the Deepor Beel Bird Count. The exercise used the visual encounter survey method to count the number of avian species in the region. Representatives of several organisations and NGOs and even student and ornithologists also took part.
The exercise was carried out using both on foot and on boats. The whole team was divided into a total of nine separate groups and each of the groups was assigned an area of the Deepor Beel wetland region. A total bird count of 26747 birds belonging to 97 bird species was recorded during the event. This is a much better report compared to the same exercise carried out last year. 2021’s Deepor Beel Bird Count recorded a total of 10289 birds belonging to 66 different species.
The region is one of the prime sites for migratory and resident avian species. It is also an important watering hole for wild elephants living in the nearby forest areas.
