Guwahati, August 21: In an attempt to spread awareness about the environmental problems created by plastic pollution, Guwahati Foodie, one of the biggest food-related communities of northeast India organised a green picnic on Sunday. Guwahati Foodie named this event the Summer Picnic 2023.
Over thirty people from various walks of life attended this event. Participants included doctors, chefs, restauranteurs, students, businessmen and even a few children accompanying their parents. The Summer Picnic 2023 was organised near the pristine Chandubi Lake.
The highlight of Summer Picnic 2023 was the complete lack of use of any single-use plastic material. Food was served on locally sourced banana leaves and tumblers made from bamboo served as glasses. No thermocol or plastic plates or glasses were used. A wide range of delectable local cuisines were served to the participants throughout the day. At the end of the day, each of the participants was gifted saplings of fruit-bearing plants including guava, mango and orange by the organisers.
The owner of Guwahati Foodie and organiser of the event, Sisir mentioned, “We want to promote the use of locally available bio-degradable materials among the masses and inspire people to plant more and more trees to protect the fragile ecosystem. The key idea is to set a benchmark so that more and more people follow the same. That way, people will start replacing plastic materials with environment-friendly materials.”
He also added, “This is the third time that we are organising the Summer Picnic. And the first after the Covid-19 global pandemic. We organise this event in summer because of several reasons. Firstly, the number of people in the destinations is comparatively less. Secondly, we attempt to promote destinations comparatively less known destinations. And thirdly, the saplings that we gift to all the participants can grow easily during the monsoons.”
