The National Street Food Festival and Eat Right Millet Mela was opened in Guwahati today. Assam Minister Keshab Mahanta inaugurated this four day event in the AEI Ground in Chandmari which will continue till 31st January.
IVWAI and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India are organizing this event. The aim of this project is to encourage the production as well as consumption of millets. National Street Food Festival and Eat Right Millet Mela brings together several businesses to showcase millet products. Nearly thirty outlets are participating in this event to give people a taste of this grain. These outlets belong to several street food vendors from different parts of the country to provide variety.
The year 2023 has been named the International Year of the Millet by the United Nations. It is an attempt to promote this food grain as a staple diet towards the nutritional needs of people across the world. This is a brainchild of the Indian Prime Minister and attempts to encourage more cultivation and sale.
Several events have been organised across the country towards promotion of millet by multiple state and central government agencies. Even private parties like hotel chains have undertaken campaigns towards this goal.
