West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) organised a mega Calf Show at Nityananda Playground in Pathsala of Assam. Organised on 7th January, this event highlighted the effectiveness and benefits of artificial insemination.
Atul Bora, the minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairying inaugurated the Calf Show Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Minister of Panchayat & Rural Development, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Nandita Gorlosa, Minister of Cooperation, Power were also present. Meenesh C Shah the Chairman of NDDB was attended along with hundreds of farmers.
100 female calves which were produced through Artificial Insemination in Assam were showcased. It was implemented through the Doorstep AI Delivery Service under the World Bank’s APART project. And implemented by WAMUL under the formal Milk value chain and the technical support being provided by NDDB Dairy Services. High Genetic Merit calves of indigenous breeds like Gir, Sahiwal and Red Sindhi and cross-breeds with Holstein Friesian and Jersey were showcased in the calf show. Calves of exotic breeds like Holstein Friesian and Jersey were displayed. F1 cows of Sahiwal, Jersey and Red Sindhi were also showcased.
Mobile AI Technicians trained at NDDB’s training institutes in Siliguri and Jalandhar will provide doorstep service. Awareness initiatives for farmers will also be undertaken to detect the heat cycles of the animal and inform the MAITs. The experienced team will arrive at the farmer’s premises and conduct the procedure of artificial insemination.
Barpeta district appears on the top in terms of milk production in Assam. That is the main reason why WAMUL has organised this calf show in Pathsala region of Barpeta. Cooperative dairying is one of the major reason for economic growth in the region, specially in the low income group. And Barpeta is inspiring the other districts of the state to move in the same direction.
