As a part of the ongoing Durand Cup trophies tour, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma unveiled the trophies in Shillong today. The event was organized at the State Convention Centre in Shillong. Several dignitaries from the administration, sports and armed forces attended this meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister mentioned that Meghalaya will be one of the hosts for the 133rd edition of the tournament. He also highlighted the sports infrastructure of the state and its ample capacity to host this prestigious tournament. He also thanked the organizers for taking the trophies to the state. And mentioned that this will encourage many youth in the state to look to take up football professionally. Conrad Sangma also wished the best for the local club in the tournament. Shillong Lajong FC is one of the 24 teams participating in the tournament. And along with Northeast United FC, it is the second team from Northeast India.
Lieutenant General Sanjay Malik, General Officer Commanding 101 Area also attended the event. He spoke about the rich sporting culture of the state and the entire Northeast India. The officer also talked about the Shillong Lajong FC participating for the first time. This is also the first time that the three Durand Cup trophies have traveled to the capital city.
After the formal unveiling, the trophies were taken on a grand tour of the city. People from across the city showed overwhelming support to the organizers. Music and public participation was also part of this tour. The rally ended with a grand celebration at Khyndailad. This celebration included a performance by a local band as well as the Jazz band by the Army. The players of the Shillong Lajong FC also attended this event, making it even more memorable. They will face Northeast United FC in Guwahati on 4th of August.
