Guwahati: Increasing the excitement of the upcoming Khelo India University Games, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled several key details of the contest. He unveiled the logo and the mascot during an event on Thursday evening. Ashtalakshmi, the vibrant butterfly is the mascot for the upcoming sporting event.
Ashtalakshmi is the embodiment of grace and symbolism. It represents the rich biodiversity and natural splendor of the Northeast India. This elegant butterfly adorns wings featuring cultural motifs and colors from each scale.
Union Minister of State for Youth Welfare and Sports Nisith Pramanik attended the event. And State Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare Nandita Gorlosa was also present. Apart from the CM and other dignitaries, national medal-winning boxer Pwilao Basumatary, international shuttler Suraj Goala, international table tennis player Divyaj Rajkhowa, Tripura judoka Rikson Debbarma, also attended this event.
Speaking on the occasion, the CM said, ”Assam has successfully hosted mega events like the South East Asian Games, the second edition of Khelo India Youth Games and most recently the Khel Maharan where over 6 lakh youth registered to participate. With Olympic stars like Lovlina Borgohain hailing from our state, our focus on youth development has been at the forefront of our efforts to put Assam on the world map.”
He also mentioned that the state is ready to welcome more than 5000 participants to the event. Adding that over 7000 dignitaries will be arriving in the city and more than 200 universities will participate. He also called on the public to welcome everyone and ensure that no one difficulty is faced during their visit.
Assam will host a total of 16 disciplines during the Khelo India University Games 2024. These include athletics, rugby, basketball, volleyball, swimming, badminton, hockey, fencing, kabaddi, football, tennis, mallakhamb, judo, table tennis, boxing, and shooting. The rest of the Northeastern states will host four events. They are men’s boxing, weightlifting, wrestling and yoga asana.
