The Government of Meghalaya had decided to celebrate National Sports Day with a week-long event. They will organize a variety of competitions from 22 to 29 August 2023. The main aim of this week long event is to encourage people of the state the stay fit. As well as participate in more and more sporting events.
The key idea revolves around the power of sports to transcend all differences and encourage people from all walks of life. And this event is a part of the larger initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It was also mentioned that the Fit India Pledge would be recited by participants across the country. Participants from Meghalaya will also do the same and promote it over social media.
Several competitions will be hosted across the state throughout the week. Sports associations, schools, and district administrations will manage these competitions across the state. Government departments will also participate in activities such as football, cycling, walkathons, and basketball. And employees will celebrate the week by reporting to work in activewear. The state also encourages the setting up of a cycle/ walk to work day. And they will notify the same soon.
The NYKS and SAI will also organise similar events in the state. This will encourage participation amongst wider public.
The department will organize the marquee events from 26 to 29 August. Shillong will host the ‘Run for Fitness’ on August 26. People from all age groups can participate in this event. The 5 km event will be free to join and begin at the Polo Grounds. Interested runners have to register themselves through the Office of the District Sports Officer of East Khasi Hills.
The state will organize an event on 29 August to distribute the awards of week-long competitions. An exhibition match between the state’s officers and the MLAs will be final event. The organisers will host this match in the MFA Ground of the JN Stadium.
