NEUFC Beats MBSG to Lift 133rd Durand Cup Trophies

Kolkata: In what is being called an unexpected turn of events, NorthEast United FC managed to beat Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the finals of the 133rd Durand Cup. This marks the first-ever title win for the Guwahati-based football club.

NEUFC made a stunning comeback from 0-2 down at half-time to emerge champions against Mohun Bagan SG at their home. The head coach Juan Pedro Benali brought on Guillermo Fernandez and Macarton at halftime and it proved to be a tactical masterclass. Goals from Alaaeddine Ajaraie (56’) and Guillermo Fernandez (58’) restored the parity early in the second half and changed the momentum in the Highlanders’ favour. However, the game ended 2-2 in regulation time. In the penalty shootout, NorthEast United FC’s goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh was the hero as he saved penalties from Liston Colaco and Subashish Bose to script history.

Speaking about the win, club owner John Abraham said, “The feeling of winning the Durand Cup has not yet sunk in. This is just a lesson for all to never give up, to hold on to the team and support the team, not just in winning times but even when we are losing.”

“There’s light at the end of the tunnel and we proved it! Congratulations to the entire team and the staff… I am just a representation standing here talking on their behalf. The real heroes are the staff, the coach, the players, and everyone involved in making this team,” he said before adding, “Big congratulations to the team for making this happen. Also, to those fans, who stood by us and supported us through thick and thin… Thank you so much!”

The club’s CEO Mandar Tamhane reflected on the proud moment for the entire North-East region and dedicated the trophy to the fans. He said “It is a proud moment for all of us at the football club. It is the first trophy that the club has won and we would like to dedicate this trophy to all our fans. We are a club which represents eight states, not just one state or one city. It’s a big responsibility for us when we represent our fans. This victory is for the fans, they deserve it for supporting the club through highs and lows. It’s the first victory and it’s very special.”

This 133rd Durand Cup win has managed to renew the energy of the fans of NEUFC. And both the team and the fans will start the ISL 2024-25 with new energy. Also, NEUFC has 2 home matches among its first five matches in the upcoming tournament.
