In a step towards pushing forwards the dream of a greener Assam and Northeast India, the creation of a new wildlife sanctuary has been approved. Named the Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary, this new protected area is located in the Barak Valley region of Assam.
The proposed Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the region between the Barak river and Sonai river. Its total area is about 320 sq kilometers and very rich in wildlife. Eight varieties of primates have been recorded in the region. It is also a very important habitat for another key species, the king cobra.
The proposal to create the Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary was put forward by Rajdeep Roy, the BJP Member of Parliament from Silchar last year. And it was finally approved by the state and signed by the Governor of Assam on the 19th of July.
Assam already has the 3rd highest number of national parks in the country. Declaration of more protected areas in the state will definitely help to save the rich natural resources of Assam. This has also boasted the tourism sector of the state to great new levels. And thus leading to more employment opportunities of the people of the region.
