On the occasion of the World Wetlands Day 2022, a total of 59 of the Critically Endangered Black Softshell Turtles were released in the Chandubi Lake of Assam.
The event was conducted by the Forest Department of Assam and Turtle Survival Alliance under its Return to the Wild initiative. This event also saw the presence of the minister of Environment and Forests of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya, PCCF HoFF Amit Sahai and Palashbari MLA Hemanga Thakuria along with other dignitaries.
The Chandubi Lake located in the foothills of the Garo Hills on the Assam–Meghalaya border. It is of recent tectonic origin, that is a major earthquake in the th year 1897, making it one of the newest wetlands of the region. It also has a very unique landscape and biodiversity making it one of the most popular tourist destinations near the city of Guwahati.
On the occasion of the World Wetlands Day, a manual named the Turtle Trail was also released. This is an educational trainer’s guide prepared by the Turtle Survival Alliance. It serves as a way to educate and spread awareness about these group of reptiles in the Northeastern part of the country.
