On the occasion of World Environment Day the Border Security Force of India initiated a project to plant around 1,28,000 sapling along the international border between India and Bangladesh and India in Tripura.
According to a report, the saplings were planted across a time period of one week. Locally growing plants were used in this initiative. Seven varieties of local fruit bearing trees and nine varieties of plants with medicinal properties were planted across the border.
The state forest department of Tripura has been working hard to promote the concept of afforestation and regeneration since last few years. And the saplings promoted by the forest department are in accordance with the weather conditions of the state. They also keep in mind the economic value and future prospects of these trees.
The Tripura government had launched an afforestation program last year aiming at the increase of its forest cover above 80% by the year 2023. The state government had also made an announcement about the payment of an monthly allowance of Rs. 200 to each family which takes care of the plants by the road near their houses.
