The Guwahati Social Forestry is planning to organize a free saplings distribution drive in Guwahati. The event is scheduled for September 10 in the Sarusajai Stadium of Guwahati.
Through this initiative, Guwahati Social Forestry also aims to set a new world record. This record pertains to the distribution of the largest number of saplings within 24 hours. This record is currently held by two departments of the government of Uttar Pradesh. They distributed a total of 76824 numbers of saplings on the 9th of August 2019 at Prayagraj.
DFO Guwahati Social Forestry Dr Priyasa Saikia mentioned that a large gathering is expected on the occasion. And proper arrangements will be made to ensure that the event goes on smoothly. She also mentioned that a large variety of free saplings will be distributed on the occasion. These include saplings of several fruit-bearing plants as well. She also invited everyone to take part in the event and collect their free saplings on that day. The department has planned to complete in 8 hours.
She mentioned that one person will be getting one free sapling from the department. She also invited educational institutions and private organizations to take part in the same. The officer also added that participants will get certificates once the new world record is set.
This initiative will also increase the green coverage of the city. It is important to note that the city has lost a large section of its green cover owing to the infrastructure projects. The massive deforestation in the last few years has shown its negative effects on the environment. Massive rises in temperature and unpredictable rainfall are some of the key pointers of climate change. Also, the plantation of trees prevents landslides, which has been a major area of concern in the city.
