The countries of Turkey and Syria have been ravaged by several major earthquakes since today morning. Reports from the ground have suggested that thousands of people have did in both the countries.
The first earthquake hit the region just before dawn at around 4 AM. Almost all the people were sleeping when the 7.8 intensity tremor hit. It was followed by a 5.7 intensity within 15 minutes. The next one hit at around 7 AM and measured more than 6 on the Richter Scale.
The second strongest of them hit at 3:54 PM measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale. Aftershocks included a 5.8 intensity tremor about ten minutes later, a 5.7 at 4:21 PM and a 6 intensity at 5:32 PM. These many high intensity earthquakes not only breaks the record of the largest number major earthquakes in a duration. It first tremor has been called as the strongest one in the history of the country.
Rescue operations continued across both the countries throughout the day. These actions continued even through the multiple strong aftershocks. More than 5000 people have been reported to be dead and even more people injured across both the countries. But even more people are still stuck under the debris of the damaged buildings in Turkey and Syria.
The president of Turkey has appealed to the international community for support in terms of rescue and support materials and equipment. Several countries have also responded to these calls by sending teams as well as materials. Another problem is that the temperatures are expected to fall drastically at night.
