Dr. Amit Mallick, the Inspector General of Forests, Project Tiger has written to the Field Director of Manas Tiger Reserve appreciating the efforts of the front-line personnel of the Manas Tiger Reserve in protecting the national animal even in the dire times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He wrote on behalf of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Also mentioning that the Manas Tiger Reserve is in the reckoning for the NTCA’s Bagh Rakshak Award for 2021 for its extraordinary conservation story by exceeding the expectations.
Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger, has recently bagged the Conservation Assured Tiger Standard Accreditation Certificate. It also received the Global Tiger Conservation Excellence Award under Category 1×2 and Conservation Excellency 2020. It was jointly awarded to the Royal Manas National Park, Bhutan and the Manas Tiger Reserve, India.
The protected area also saw remarkable reduction in wildlife and forest offences. In 2019, a total of 20 offenders were arrested and 15 in 2020. During 2021, till date only two wildlife offenders were arrested by the authorities. During 2020-21, five numbers of wildlife offenders and during 2021-22 till date four numbers of wildlife offenders were apprehended.
Several new anti- poaching camps have been set up at Alabari, Chandmari, Gabharukhunda, Kathpura, River Tapu boat camp, Transit camp at Bhuyanpara Range Hqr. since 2019 to protect the park from poaching.
