The Northeast Indian office of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India celebrated the International Day of Action of Rivers on the banks of the Brahmaputra river in the city of Guwahati.
The International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated on the 14th of March every year. This year saw the 25th edition of the event. It aims to protect the rivers and waterways across the world from potential damage caused by human activity. And the theme for this year is to highlight the importance of Rivers to biodiversity. The most harmful materials that land up in the river are usually non-biodegradable plastic products.
The Ministry of Tourism celebrated this day by organizing a cleanliness drive. This drive took place at the popular Lachit Ghat on the banks of the Brahmaputra river. This cleanliness drive was carried out in the morning hours of Monday. Senior officials of the department was present alongside several student volunteers. As the water level of the river has gone down drastically during this dry season, the sand bank is now a very large area. And since the river slows down drastically in this region, a lot of the garbage disposed into the river in the upper stretches lands up right here. The garbage collected was sent for recycling after the event
